Project Overview
IRID is implementing this assignment under the Climate Smart Education System Initiative (CSESI), a global program led by GPE and Save the Children to strengthen education systems’ capacity to respond to climate change. In Somaliland, the project focuses on mainstreaming climate change and disaster risk reduction (DRR) into primary education by strengthening curriculum content, teaching practices, and teacher training systems.

IRID’s Role and Scope of Work
Under this assignment, IRID is providing technical leadership and national expertise to support the Ministry of Education and Science to:
- Review the existing primary school Social Studies curriculum and identify entry points for climate change and DRR integration.
- Align climate education content with the Somaliland National Curriculum Framework for Transformation (2022), National Climate Change Policy (2023), and relevant international frameworks.
- Facilitate participatory task-team workshops with government institutions and partners to define priority climate learning themes, grade-level thresholds, and age-appropriate learning outcomes.
- Develop high-quality supplementary student learning materials and teacher teaching guides on climate change and resilience.
- Pilot the developed materials in selected primary schools, gather feedback from teachers and learners, and finalize materials for wider use.
- Build the institutional capacity of MoES curriculum writers and teacher trainers to sustainably integrate climate change into curricula, pedagogy, and teacher professional development beyond the life of the project.

Long-Term Impact
The project contributes to building a climate-resilient education system in Somaliland, equipping children with the knowledge, skills, values, and competencies needed to understand climate risks, adapt to environmental change, and contribute to sustainable development. By institutionalizing climate change education within national systems, the initiative supports long-term resilience, policy coherence, and intergenerational climate awareness.
